The League of Women Voters of the San Juans will hold a candidate, charter proposition, and initiative forum tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 13. Ballots will be mailed to county voters next week from the County Elections office.
At the Orcas League of Women Voters forum tomorrow, Margie Doyle, Orcas LWV-San Juan Islands Member at Large, will introduce the League and announce the rules that govern the forum: basically 3-minute opening statements followed by questions-and-answers from the audience. Lisa Byers will moderate.
The schedule calls for Richard Fralick to speak in opposition to the Charter Review Propositions 1, 2, and 3. Steve Garrison will speak in favor of the Propositions.
Legislative representatives outside the county government will then either speak for themselves or be represented by a proxy: Rick Larsen and Dan Mathews for Federal Representative; Kevin Ranker and John Swapp for State Legislative District Senator; Jeff Morris and Howard Pellett for State Legislative District Representative.
Ken Wood is scheduled to present on behalf of the GMO-Free San Juan measure.
Concluding the forum will be statements by San Juan County Council Orcas West candidates Rick Hughes and Scott Lancaster. They will also answer questions from the audience.
At the close of the LWV forum, scheduled for around 2:40 p.m., some candidates and spokespersons will be available to answer further questions.
The League wishes to thank Lisa Byers for moderating the forum, and Mindy Kayl for serving as timekeeper. The League of Women Voters does not endorse candidates or political parties, but does encourage informed and active participation in government.
