Orcas Recycling Services is proud to announce a new public service at The Exchange. A new program has been established, which will accept and recycle all types of batteries, beginning in September.
There will be no cost to the public for rechargeable batteries (such as cordless tools and cell phones) and sealed lead acid batteries (such as batteries for computer backup systems and cars). General household alkaline batteries will also be accepted, for a nominal fee.
“People have been asking for battery recycling for a number of years, there’s a big need on Orcas, so we’ve figured out how to make that possible and affordable,” said Jeff Ludwig, the ORS Board member spearheading the new program. “We love to find and implement appropriate solutions for handling and recycling non-garbage waste items, and hope soon to also apply that principle and our expertise to the solid waste stream.”
Ludwig says that details of the new recycling program will be released in early September.

Alkaline batteries may be left at aaaace Hardware, at least in Anacortes. Flashlight, hearing aid, etc.
For the past 18 months, both the Port of Orcas and the Orcas Fire Dist have offered battery recycling at no cost, as well as a drop-off point for CFLs which we bag and take to OPALCO. It’s nice to have another player in the game.
Now there’s no excuse for chucking those items into the waste stream—there’s a better way!
Finally! I can empty my refrigerator crisper drawer of all the used household batteries I’ve been saving for years, hoping for a way to recycle batteries locally!Great work, ORS and Jeff!
